CARRIE GRACIE, the former BBC China Editor, recently resigned from her job in protest against gender pay inequality, and lack of transparency over pay structures and staff contracts within the organisation which are in breach of the Equality Act 2010.
Gracie has the oval-shaped face, prominent cheekbones and pale skin and hair of the self-reliant metal element type which corresponds physically to the respiratory system, skin, colon, and the upper body area. The metal type doesn’t start with a business plan or spreadsheet like the wood element type, or provide rousing, emotional leadership like the fire type; it takes up the sword coolly and fearlessly against injustice, and cuts away that which is outdated or damaged.

Her wide cheekbones give her authority, power and influence in the world, networking and leadership abilities. The cushioned padding over the bones indicate she can cut through the BBC’s reputation in the most charming and articulate way; the sharper the cheekbones, the more aggressive the approach. She displayed the magnetic quality of the metal element with clarity and calm authority as she spoke to the Parliamentary Select Committee recently. Her voice, at times of emotion with a hint of tears, was predominantly the five element ‘weeping’ sound — the metal emotions of sorrow and grief.
In her presentation to the Select Committee about discrimination at the BBC, she told MPs it wasn't about the money — she refused the news organisation’s offer of £45,000 to kiss and make up. It was, she stated, about “applying the law, her status as a specialist journalist, collective rights for women across the BBC, pay parity for work of equal value, and acknowledgement that her work in China was as good as her male peers” — all qualitative concerns of the metal type.

The tip of the nose - the ‘money box’ - is a metal correlation in Chinese Face Reading. The end of Gracie’s nose is delicate with small-ish nostrils which reveals that her self-esteem and career path is related to values, not making money. Her nostrils, which relate to the years 48-50, when viewed straight-on, are what is called an ‘exposure’ in Face Reading — not hidden by a curve at the end of the nose — which means a need to save rather than spend, and loss of money or energy during those years. This coincides with 2011 when she left work to have treatment for breast cancer.
The whole of the nose shows our 40s, our sense of ego boundaries and approach to life and work. An ability to manifest in a determined way with the discipline to work alone is evidenced by her straight, slightly thin nose which is in balance with the rest of her face. She also has a little bump at the end which you often see on investigative journalists and those who like to dig beneath the surface to get the back-story: perfect for working in a secretive society like China, or indeed the Beeb.

Gracie’s undereye area has horizontal lines showing low kidney energy due to stress and the need for minerals to boost the adrenals and improve hydration (photo at the top). Metal constitutional types do well on refined treatments such as homeopathy, tissue salts, tinctures rather than tablets. Whilst she was undergoing cancer treatment and during her recovery, her eyes showed yin sanpaku - three parts white - i.e. you could see the sclera under the iris as well as on each side (photo to the left). This is a sign of trauma and shock, lack of sleep and the effects of medication. Today, her shen and skin are burnished and yang again, and no sign of sanpaku: her nervous system is balanced.
The eyebrows are a pointer to how she applies her energies and her ‘drive and go’: they’re refined and the rounded shape of the water element: her decision making is more emotional than rational. The hairs are fine and pale, not the current fashion for heavy, dark brows, and this denotes her energies are sensitive; she thought she had been considered “a soft touch’ by the Beeb. Those with thinner eyebrows need to schedule regular down-time and are more susceptible to burnout.
What will Carrie do next? Having tapped into the #MeToo and #Time'sUp zeitgeist and the 100th anniversary of the Suffragette Movement, her face has now become another symbol of women’s campaign for equality #equalpayday. After a thirty year career at the BBC, her career lines at 56 show a slowing down, time for a change of direction, consolidation and a less stressful life. And no need to read Volume 2 of the Thoughts of Xi Jinxing on the Governance of China!
